  • Episode 34 – Somatic Experiencing with Kelsey MacDougall
December 9, 2022
Kelsey MacDougall

People often have unexplained physical symptoms that do not seem to have an illness or injury they can be attributed to. Years can be spent visiting doctors and specialists, just to be told that physically, everything is in order.

Trauma and traumatic experiences can end up being stored in the body and eventually all sorts of physical symptoms can occur because of this. If the trauma is not processed, it cannot be released from the body.

Somatic experiencing is a body-focused approach that can help release trauma from the body. In essence, it lets the body complete its self-protection cycle, so we can heal and release the energy tied to trauma, shock, or traumatic experiences. This can have a liberating effect and support people in moving forward from trauma.

Kelsey is trained as a Clinical Counsellor, registered with Canadian Counsellor and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA) and British Columbia Association of Clinical Counsellors (BCACC), Somatic Experiencing Practitioner, and Holistic Nutritionist. She is a believer in our innate ability to heal, in body, mind, and spirit.

Her own healing journey started in her teen years, after spending her entire childhood struggling with her physical health and in a chronic state of distress.

Kelsey has spent nearly two decades on her own healing, on various levels, and it is truly her passion to support others in their own healing journey. With everything she has learned and continues to learn, she is able to support you in your own journey from a place of empathy and compassion.

As a strong believer in the mind-body connection, Kelsey primarily works with clients from the lens of Somatic Experiencing, which is something she describes as a "body-based psychotherapy". She uses this work to help her clients get more deeply connected to themselves.

Through this work, along with other approaches such as nutrition, mindfulness, and exploring attachment, Kelsey supports her clients in reconnecting to themselves again, in body, mind, and spirit.

Kelsey received a Master’s Degree in Counselling Psychology, and a Diploma of Holistic Nutrition from the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition. Currently, she is receiving on-going training in Somatic Experiencing, as well as Early Developmental Trauma.

Kelsey passionately works with clients on their own trauma, particularly those impacted by trauma in their early years and who continue to struggle with the impacts.
